Service Leadership Programs

Kiwanis International embraces a family of service organizations, from elementary school children through adults. The parent Kiwanis organization sponsors the following service leadership clubs and organizations:

  • K Kids in elementary schools
  • Builders Club in junior high and middle schools
  • Key Club in high schools
  • Circle K in colleges and universities
  • Aktion clubs for adults with disabilities

Manchester Kiwanis sponsors four Service Leadership organizations. Each club has a Kiwanis Advisor and a Faculty Advisor. Club Chair of the Service Leadership Programs is Debbie Kelley.

This past year the Builders Club had 18 members including sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. In October the Club hosted the Dress up Your Advisor Challenge to raises funds for the Kiwanis International Iodine Deficiency Fund. In November they had a fundraiser for Heifer International. This year club members focused on making scarves and selling them and with the money students choose the animals they wanted to purchase for those in need. In February Club members ran grade level activities to raise money and supplies for local animal shelters. Throughout the year members run bake sales, ice cream or milkshake sales and sell snacks after school. Every month, club members help at New Horizons, the Manchester soup kitchen and food pantry. They may find themselves serving lunch, sorting and shelving food or helping bag food. In December they collected toiletries and made up holiday bags that were passed out at the soup kitchen. This past May members met with the director of the homeless outreach program. He shared information about the homeless situation in Manchester and answered many questions. Students then went on a short tour of parts of Manchester and had an opportunity to talk to a couple of homeless people and learn their stories. When they returned to school, members talked about the experience and what they learned. The Club began a new project this year. Builder's Club members as well as members of the Athletic Committee went about once a week to the Webster School to read and work with immigrant children. Over the past few years the Club has completed more than a dozen service activities and fund raisers.

This past year The Derryfield School Key Club had 43 members. Club members meet twice per week to plan activities and listen to various speakers. Students must document 50 hours per year of community service work to have Key Club included as an activity on his or her transcript.

Key Club members participate in varied activities; including the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk and the Walk Against Hunger, Winter Special Olympics, and Thanksgiving Baskets for families of Child Health Services.  Last year a strong connection was made with the immigrant and refugee community, with students participating regularly in monthly events for these families.

Key Club members meet every Tuesday afternoon throughout the school year. The club currently has 20 members from Manchester, Hooksett and Bedford. The past year has largely been one of rebuilding the club’s membership. The club has supported the VNA, National Guard’s Operation Military Kids, and other organizations. In the summer of 2007, members held a car wash and did face painting at four home games of the Manchester Arena Wolves Football Team. Proceeds will be used for UNICEF and to provide leadership training at Kiwanis Key Leader. Two officers attended the Key Club International convention in Florida, where they interacted with Key Club members from around the world and obtained many new ideas for service projects and fundraising. Contact has been made with the Builders Club at Cawley Middle School to recruit graduates into the West High Key Club.
