Kiwanis of Manchester has established a literacy initiative in a unique environment; Granite State Laundry at Lake and Union Streets. Located in the heart of refugee and immigrant neighborhoods where English is often the second language, the "reading nook" provides kids with the opportunity to enjoy a book while their parents attend to laundry. Plus, children are encouraged to take books home. Manchester Kiwanians will be restocking the library regularly. Kiwanis of Manchester commemorated the occasion with a service project creating "no-sew blankets" for infants and packaging personal care items. Both will be distributed to shelters and non-profits serving those in need. Our thanks to Michelle Chretien and Jocelyn Collins who arranged for a workspace at their employer, RMS Mortgage and to the Kiwanians who donated materials. The spirit of the season was on full display at the Boys and Girls Club of Manchester on Decenmber 1. An annual signature service project, Kiwanis partners with the Club and our sponsored Key Clubs to present a morning of face painting, crafts, songs, gifts, lunch, and a visit with Santa. Several dozen kids were served. Many were from the refugee and immigrant communities. A huge thanks to the Boys and Girls Club and to the Bedford, Memorial, and West Key Clubs for staffing the workstations. More here: http://www.kiwanismanchesternh.org/Page/4225.
